Whether it’s your first visit or whether you’ve been going for years, it’s necessary that you understand the importance of these visits for maintaining good health for the rest of your life. Find out more about cancer screenings for women and how often you should be getting screened.

A cervical cancer screening should be a regular part of any woman’s health care. Women should start getting regular cancer screening around 21 years old. Of course, how often you have to visit our Denver OBGYN for these screenings will depend on many factors including your age and past medical history. Here is the one most important screenings you should be getting and how frequently you should be getting it.

Pap Test

A pap test is one of the most effective ways to screen for cervical cancer. Women between the ages of 21 to 65 should be getting regular screenings, as recommended by one of our women’s health doctors. On average, women between the ages of 21 and 29 should have a Pap test about every 3 years. Women 30-65 years old should typically have a Pap and HPV test every 5 years.

Getting Screened

If you have a history of cervical cancer, a weakened immune system, or if you’ve been diagnosed with HIV, then you shouldn’t follow these same guidelines. It’s important that you talk with us about how often you should be coming in for routine cancer screenings, especially if one of these factors applies to you.

If you are a woman over the age of 65 and have had normal Pap smears for many years, or if you’ve had a total hysterectomy and had your cervix removed, then we can talk about whether or not you even need to come in for Pap tests anymore.
