Prenatal care is an important part of maintaining a healthy pregnancy. Prenatal care includes routine visits to your Denver, CO OBGYNp several times throughout your pregnancy. These visits give your doctor an opportunity to monitor the baby’s health and development, as well as your health. Partners in Women’s Health are your caring and experienced doctors for prenatal care.

Prenatal Visits

Between eight and 28 weeks pregnant, prenatal visits are scheduled with your Denver OBGYN every four weeks. Between 28 and 35 weeks, visits will be scheduled every two to three weeks. From 35 weeks until birth, prenatal visits occur weekly. Several things can be checked during a routine prenatal visit, including:

  • Monitoring your weight.
  • Checking your vital signs, including blood pressure.
  • Listening to the baby’s heartbeat.
  • Measuring your abdomen.
  • Gathering urine or blood samples.
  • Performing an ultrasound.
  • Checking to see how far you are dilated in the last few weeks.
  • Diet and exercise during pregnancy can be discussed.

There are several notable visits that occur during your pregnancy. During your first visit, your medical history will be noted and a pap smear performed. An ultrasound might be scheduled around this time, or shortly after, to confirm the pregnancy and calculate a due date. At your second visit, prenatal labs are performed, as well as screening for such conditions as Cystic Fibrosis. If desired, the flu vaccine can be administered during the 16th week of pregnancy.

An additional ultrasound is performed during the 20th week to check the baby’s anatomy and development. At this time, it is possible to identify the sex of the baby, if desired. During the 28th week, you will be screened for gestational diabetes and receive a TDAP vaccine. Rhogam injections are also administered at this time for mothers who are Rh negative. A Group B Strep vaginal culture is performed during the 35th week of pregnancy.

Prenatal visits are extremely important for promoting a healthy pregnancy. Following the recommended schedule for prenatal visits allows your Denver, CO OBGYN to monitor both your health and the baby’s. Additionally, your doctor can identify potential concerns right away and address them before there is a serious problem.
